Touring the Africam Safari

Enjoying a local Cantina in Puebla Centro
Our group, who travelled from Rincón de Guayabitos, spent January 25 and 26, 2024 in the City of Puebla. On the morning of January 25 our private tour bus took us to the Africam Safari located just 20 km from downtown Puebla.
The Africam Safari is 494.21 acres and founded by Captain Carlos Camacho Espiritu in 1972 with the purpose of creating a community conscience for the protection of animals.
The wildlife park has several habitats, including African Savannah, American steppes, Tropical Jungle, Mexican Forest, Tiger Lake, Lion Territory and a large walk-through adventure zone. There are approximately 2500 animals of 350 species that roam freely in a habitat which encourages animal development and reproduction. It is one of the few establishments in Latin America which includes white tigers in its list of animals.
Benito the Giraffe arrived to the Africam Safari Wildlife Park in Puebla on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at 4:30 am after more than 30 hours of travel across México to join a herd of seven other African giraffes as a new stallion. Benito and his caregivers, guarded by the National Guard and State Police, travelled 1,900 kms through 11 States in México from the the city of Juárez, Chihuahua to his new home in Puebla. Authorities demanded Benito be moved to live in better conditions after living eight months in deplorable conditions. Shortly after arrival, Benito is said to have settled in well and is in good condition, already eating a little and drinking water. Benito’s caregivers in Africam will be taking care of him for a long time. Benito’s caregivers have a lot of experience with giraffes, and are passionate about animals.
The Africam Safari has been successful in assisting reproduction of many endangered species, including the golden eagle, pictured on the Mexican flag.
Upon our return to the city of Puebla in late afternoon and as we were walking to our hotel, we stumbled upon a small Mexican cantina, El idolo de Mexico Centro, where we indulged in tasting many mezcal libations.
It was fun bonding with the other people on our tour and, of course, meeting more Mexican amigos.
It never ceases to amaze me how friendly the Mexican people can be are and how everyone is so gracious and willing to go out of their way to help us to enjoy this beautiful country and learn about the different cultures.
Our last afternoon and evening in Puebla Centro was filled with great fun bonding with the group, making new amigos and making memories to last a lifetime.
México is a diverse and spectacular country and there’s much more to México than the beautiful beaches Canadians frequently associate it with when thinking of vacationing in México. We are very fortunate to be able to travel to see and learn more about this beautiful country.
